How We Began
"Necessity is the mother of invention."
The seed that would eventually grow into Birth Story Medicine was planted in my soul after my first birth. I felt a deep sense of confusion and shock that drove me to seek a deeper understanding of my birth story — something I couldn't find in a cesarean support group or through therapy. Traditional therapists, unfamiliar with the nuanced aspects of birth stories, such as childbirth physiology, terminology, and the medical culture surrounding childbirth, often overlook the subtle clues and truths in birth stories.
As a mother and midwife, I realized that millions of women like me needed specialized counseling to navigate the unexpected and often traumatic realities of childbirth. As a midwife, I began listening more attentively to the beliefs and stories of pregnant and postpartum parents about their childbirth experiences. I envisioned a narrative process accessible to parents as a routine part of their prenatal and postpartum care.
To accomplish this, I first needed to educate myself. I earned a master's degree in psychology and counseling, wrote my thesis on the drawings of modern and ancient women, and studied narrative therapies with numerous teachers. The first birth story I transformed was my own.
Through the process of listening to and healing countless birth stories, I became a birth story counselor and developed a philosophy and process for this specialized counseling. Around 2008, I named my unique approach "Birth Story Medicine" and began teaching it to other birth professionals. This led to our vision of establishing a Birth Story School that offers certification as a birth story specialist.

After my birth, I tried to talk to my midwife about my disappointment, but she misunderstood and mistakenly thought I was blaming her! I sought validation from an online birth trauma group, and for the first time, I felt seen. However, I still didn't find the peace of mind I was looking for.
In 2012, I earned about Birth Story Medicine and discovered the concept of the birth story gates and found the meaning I was looking for.
I am thrilled to be a Certified Birth Story Medicine Tutor, which has been incredibly satisfying work.

Guiding Philosophy of Birth Story Medicine
- Personal stories are dynamic and continuously evolving.
- Experiencing or witnessing childbirth is truly a profound event that stirs our minds and emotions, touching our souls. A guided session provides space to reflect on and process this experience, which is an integral part of your reflective return.
- We have the power to revisit and reshape our stories, allowing them to evolve with greater understanding.
- By engaging with the archetype of initiation, storytellers can move beyond viewing their experiences solely as trauma. Instead, they discover unexpected, profound meanings that positively influence every aspect of their lives.
- Within each of us resides several storytellers, each with its unique perspective of our story, seeking understanding, resolution, or peace. A birth story specialist is trained to discern which voice is speaking and what is needed to heal.
- A story and storyteller can shift in the blink of an eye through solution-focused dialogue, empathic acknowledgment, or the telling of a hero myth.
- Many people struggle to find resolution after a traumatic experience when they only look backward or outward for answers. During our sessions, storytellers often discover the Medicine , a metaphor for the healing and transformative power of their experiences, they seek is found where they least expect it—in the Wound or Shadow.
- Intense experiences can catalyze resilience and promote posttraumatic growth, a term that refers to the positive psychological changes that can occur as a result of struggling with a traumatic event.
- Many people struggle to find resolution after a traumatic experience when they only look backward or outward for answers. However, our sessions show that storytellers often discover the alchemical Medicine they seek is found where they least expect it—in the Wound or Shadow, leading to unexpected growth and resilience.
